Hailing from Mississippi, producer TrellGotWings has been behind the beat of a few rap stars. Wiz Khalifa, Rich Homie Quan, Rae Sremmurd’s Jxmmi, and Boosie are just some of the names he’s worked with. With his buzz constantly growing, the Mississippi native will be adding to this list very soon. Producing since 2013, Trell has made a name for himself by consistently putting out bangers. As he continues growing as a producer, he’s teamed up with Taz Taylor’s Internet Money and doesn’t look to be taking his foot off the pedal. We recently caught up with Trell to talk about his production, some people he would work with, and more.
How did you first get into producing?
I started off remaking instrumentals to my favorite songs that I’d listen to & I figured if I can remake these I can make my own stuff. So I started doing that.
Where did the name TrellGotWings come from?
The name TrellGotWings came from my friends and Wingstop (laughs). We were at Wingstop and I was the only one eating so I got my food and came back to the table and Ben was like “Oooh it’s time to eat, Trell bought us some wings, we got some wings”, basically tryna be funny (laughs). And I was like “No nigga, Trell got wings, y’all ain’t got nothing.” It was just a funny moment that stuck with us.
What’s the hardest part about being a producer to you?
The hardest part about being a producer to me is patience.
What are some of the things you focus on when it comes to producing a beat?
My focuses when it comes to making a beat is getting my mix right and making my kicks extra punchy.
Who are some of the artists you’ve worked with?
I’ve worked with Wiz, Rich Homie Quan, Jxmmi, Boosie, Kap G, Starlito, and Sy Ari Da Kid.
What was the feeling like when you placed your first beat?
When I got my first placement, I was happy but it only made me work harder.
Is there anything that you dislike? Whether it be how artists treat producers or what other producers may do.
I mean a lot of artists act Hollywood, but it doesn’t effect me. And it’s a lot of producers out there that think this music business is a game, but it’s your career.
Who are some artists and producers you’d like to work with?
Producers I want to work with are Wheezy (we both from the Mississippi), Hit-Boy, Boi-1da, WondaGurl, Sounwave, & TM88. Artists I wanna work with: Gucci Mane, Justin Bieber, Big Sean, Lana Del Rey, Lil Wayne, Travis Scott, & Young Thug.
Talk about Internet Money and how joining them came about.
Internet Money is Internet Money. Taz Taylor is the founder. We known each other for about a year now. That’s my bro, he just asked me to join and I did what any other producer would do and said yeah. It’s me, Taz, TheBeatPlug, Nell, Nick Mira, DT Legendary, Nikko Bunkin, Young Kelz, CamGotHits, Poloboy Shawty, & KFX Kicks. We just be gettin’ money from the internet. Internet Money.
I did an interview with Nell not too long ago, and he named you and him as an artist/producer duo he would build a label around. What’s you two relationship like?
Nell and I have been working for almost a year and a half now. He got one of my beats from YouTube and made a song to it called “Numbers” and I kept seeing it in my notifications on Twitter. So I finally decided to listen to it one day, and I was like damn, this dude hard as hell. We been working ever since then. NellGotWings coming 10/11/16 on my birthday, that may not be the name of the tape though.
Is there any other projects you got with any other rappers?
Yea, but I don’t want to speak on it now cause I don’t know what beats they’ll use. Sometimes they use beats I don’t like I don’t want to speak on it now.
